Penelope Cruz says she didn’t buy her two children cell phones and that they don’t even have social media accounts, which she describes as a “cruel experiment” on the children, Business Insider reports.

“It’s so easy to manipulate, especially when you have a brain that’s still forming,” the 49-year-old actress told Elle magazine.

Since 2010, Cruz has been married to Spanish actor Javier Bardem, with whom she has two children: a 10-year-old daughter named Luna and a 12-year-old son named Leo.

The actress says that she and Bardem try to protect their children from technology as much as possible, so they “don’t even have cell phones.”

Speaking of the pernicious effects of social media, she rhetorically asked in an interview with Elle, “who pays the price?”

“Not us, our generation, which may have learned how BlackBerry works at the age of 25. This is a cruel experiment on children and teenagers,” complained Penelope Cruz.

The actress also revealed that she strongly defends her children’s right to privacy and that they will be the ones to decide if they want a career that will put them in the spotlight like their parents.

“They decide for themselves whether they will get a job that will be more open to the public or not. I can talk about that when they’re ready,” Cruz said.

Her latest film, Ferrari, opened in cinemas in Romania on January 5, after its international premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year.

Cruise will play in the feature film the role of Laura Ferrari, the wife of the legendary founder of the Italian car company, who was played by Adam Driver in the biopic.
