In a statement sent to The Associated Press and posted on Tanaka’s Instagram, Carey’s backup dancer-turned-creative director and partner detailed their split, News.ro reported.

“It is with mixed emotions that I share this personal news of my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven incredible years together,” he wrote.

“Our decision to go our separate ways is mutual, and we do so with deep respect and a great sense of gratitude for the precious time we spent together. The memories we created and the artistic collaboration will remain in my heart forever.”

“I look forward to continuing my journey, knowing that my passion for inspiration, dance and creativity will be reflected in the next chapters,” he continued.

Tanaka and Carey first met when Tanaka joined The Adventures of Mimi tour in 2006 as a backup dancer.

The “All I Want for Christmas is You” singer first confirmed her relationship to AP in 2017.

“I’m just going to say, ‘I really don’t talk about my personal life.’ Because that’s what I’ve done before and it really worked for a while,” she said at the time, smiling. “I just don’t like talking about my personal life… Me and my boyfriend, we don’t want to do it.”

Rumors of their breakup began circulating online last month when fans noticed that Tanaka did not join Carey on her Merry Christmas One and All! tour.

Carey has not made a public statement about the breakup.
