Hulu is preparing a new documentary about her Diane von Furstenberginfluential fashion designer who popularized women’s dress.
According to Variety, Oscar winner Sharmeen Obeid Sheena, who won the short films Save Face and Girl in the River, is directing the film with Trish Dalton.
As for the release date and title of the feature documentary, they will be announced later.
Through archival footage and personal interviews, the film reveals the life and career of a fashion designer who forged her own path in a male-dominated industry and built a multi-million dollar fashion empire.
Born in Belgium to Holocaust survivors, she began designing womenswear around 1970, about a year after her marriage to Prince Egon von Furstenberg. They divorced in 1983 and she later moved to New York, where her company’s flagship is still located.
Von Furstenberg’s creations have been worn by Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.
The description of the documentary describes the 76-year-old fashion designer as “a true legend” and emphasizes that “through sheer determination, she overcame every challenge that came her way, including sexism, the dangers of immigrating to America, the ups and downs of the industry, a public divorce and battle with cancer.”
“Over the past 50 years, she has been winning, smashing glass ceilings and opening doors for women everywhere…and living by her own rules. We hope this story will inspire the next generation,” said Obaid-Shenoy and Dalton.
