According to the Rolling Stone website, the news of the death was confirmed by his wife Zara. “I lost a wonderful husband and a wonderful showman for the audience. It was a “national treasure”. People loved him. Wherever he went, he was surrounded by people who admired him. When we got married, he introduced me to the press as a member of the royal family, insisting that I was the new Zara Phillips and related to the queen.

The Tottenham-born actor has appeared in over 200 films, television and radio series over a career spanning more than eight decades.

Phillips was known for his distinctive British accent, with which he spoke phrases such as “Ding dong”, “Well hello” and “I’m talking”. In 2001, he co-starred with Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
The actor was ill and suffered two strokes in the past.
