Tim Burton may never work with Disney again: ‘It’s a big and terrible circus’

A few days before the release of his new series “Wednesday”, which is a television spin-off of the hit film “The Addams Family”, Tim Burton it turned out that the film is a fantasy “Dumbo» since 2019, probably his last collaboration with Disney.

Speaking at the Lumiere Festival in Lyon shortly after receiving the award, the popular director compared the Disney studio to the “terribly big circus” that Dumbo found himself in in his film.

Burton began his career as an animator at Disney before being hired by Warner Bros. to promote his directing debut on live TV, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. He returned to Disney, starring in films such as Ed Wood, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Frankenweenie and most recently Dumbo.

The American director believes that the entertainment industry has changed so much that it no longer makes sense for him to work with the entertainment industry giant. He explained that his experience on Dumbo made him realize that Disney was something much more to his career.

“I started at Disney. I have been hired and fired there several times in my career. As for Dumbo, I realized that I work in this terrible, big circus and I need to run. This movie is kind of autobiographical,” Burton said.

During a master class he presented at the festival on Friday, Burton also shared his thoughts on the “boom” of superhero films. His 1989 film Batman helped develop the genre, and Burton was surprised that there was still a lot of interest in superheroes on the big screen.

“In the beginning there was a lot of excitement. It’s amazing how much has changed, in the sense that we’re seeing a tortured superhero and weird costumes. But for me it was a good time. It looked like something new. Now when people ask me about the new Batman, I laugh and cry because I briefly go back in time to when the studios said the story was “too dark”. Now it looks like an easy adventure.”
