Spain halts Worldcoin crypto project over privacy concerns
March 6, 2024
The Spanish government’s data protection agency (AEPD) on Wednesday ordered the Worldcoin cryptocurrency project suspend its activities in the country.
The suspension order applies to the registration of new users and the processing of information that the foundation already has. The agency said its order will be valid for a period of three months.
The AEPD cited privacy concerns, warning that the processing of “biometric data… carries high risks to people’s rights, taking into account their sensitive nature”.
The decision was based on “exceptional circumstances” that triggered the need to protect people’s personal data, the AEPD said.
The AEPD also said it had received several complaints about the cryptocurrency project, including questions about insufficient information about the use of customers’ personal information and the ability to object to it. It has also received complaints about whether the project contains information about minors.
