Although on a declarative level the European Union has reduced its dependence on Russian gas, in fact, imported gas still comes from there, only in detours, says Senator Laurent Antal. Without these gases, there is a risk of blackout, that is, complete blackout.
The official made the announcement during a debate organized by two environmental NGOs, which argue that the Neptun Deep gas project will have a negative impact on the environment.
“It is important to talk about energy security, and we must take into account the following aspect: this year there will be elections to the European Parliament, and after the elections I think that the Green Deal and Fit for 55 (the EU plans to reduce the use of fossil fuels in favor of renewable sources – no ) will be somewhat revised. No one will refuse them, but it is clear that there will be adjustments,” said Antal.
“Today we no longer transport oil and gas from Russia de jure, but de facto the entire European Union also imports gas from Russia, through Turkstream (via Turkey, then through Bulgaria or Greece – no), and we transport petroleum products from India, which also buys them from Russia,” the senator added.
He showed that this compromise was reached because the energy security of European countries could be at risk if these resources were abandoned.
“Why is this allowed? Because there is industry that consumes gas, and without gas we risk the security of supply. In 2010, the Austrian ANRE conducted a study that showed that if we did not have the base capacity to generate electricity (non-renewable resources such as fossils – no), after 74 hours we would be in blackout, leading to anarchy, – Antal continued.
An analysis by Politico in November 2023 suggests that it is likely that gas imported from Turkey to countries such as Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary is actually still Russian.
