According to an analysis by the Intelligent Energy Association, some gas suppliers were ardent supporters of keeping the price cap. He says he tried to convince the executive of the need to prepare for the post-ceiling moment and avoid an increase in the price of gas for the public in 2025, but some suppliers are opposed, even if the reason for their existence is precisely the free market.
“One company is enough for a regulated market”, no more
Natural questions to ask, according to the Smart Energy Association
– Why are they against it, those who received money from the state many months late, because of this ceiling?
– Why do those who justify their existence exclusively in the free market (in a regulated market one integrated supply company is enough) want a price cap? Maybe because it’s easier and more profitable that way?
Today’s prices would be lower if measures had been taken a year ago
Gas prices would be lower today if the authorities had taken certain measures a year ago. Last year on January 11, 2023, the Intelligent Energy Association requested a re-analysis of the gas cap price in accordance with future events and trends.
“Six months ago, we showed that the removal of limits/compensations from electricity bills is the same as for gas, a much more complex process than their implementation,” the Association of Intelligent Energy also notes.
She believes the same thing will happen on April 1, 2025, if we don’t act a year earlier today.
Actual gas prices are based on past contracts, the cost of stored gas, etc. and they are likely to follow a slight downward trend, given the price quotations on the TTF exchange in the Netherlands in the coming months.
Taking into account the behavior of Romanian suppliers in recent years and assuming that the price of the gas purchased by them will correspond to the trend of quotations on European stock exchanges, Asociația Energia Inteligtnă estimates what will be the price that the population will actually pay in the next three months, starting from the provisions of the laws on gas price cap, during the price cap period and in the first month after the cap was established.
“Thus, we can observe a tendency for the price of gas to decrease during the entire period of the restriction and its increase after the end of this period. Based on the current prices in the contracts, we expect that the household consumer will pay in April 2025 a price of 0.550 lei/MW -h with VAT compared to the estimated price based on the Smart Energy Association’s Post-Ceiling Action proposals of 0.231 lei/MWh with VAT,” the Smart Energy Association also notes.
