The Geneva Motor Show is taking place in Switzerland after a five-year hiatus, after a strange edition took place in Qatar in 2023, but under the name “Geneva International Motor Show Qatar”. There are far fewer brands than in the good old days, when star cars cost hundreds of thousands of euros. One of the stars of the show is the third-generation Dacia Duster, a model that will reach buyers this spring.
The show will be very interesting also because it will be attended by two Chinese brands that have big plans for the coming years in Europe: BYD and MG. The Chinese are becoming more visible in Europe: MG’s ZS SUV, for example, became the best-selling new car model in the Spanish market in December, with 2,300 units, besides the Sandero and Clio. In Spain, the model costs from 15,000 euros.
At the Geneva Motor Show in 2024, such brands as Renault, Dacia, MG, BYD and Lucid will be present. Brands such as Iveco and Pininfarina will also be on stands.
By 2015 and 2016, the Geneva Motor Show featured models from more than 30 car brands, and the most expensive cars were new models from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Rolls Royce, as well as high-performance versions from Mercedes, BMW, Audi. or Range Rover.
After 2015, in the big European salons – Geneva, Paris, Frankfurt – more and more brands decided not to participate due to the high costs and also because it was concluded that the salon no longer helped both the brand image and sales, because it was in the past.
The salon was extremely important: for example, a record number of visitors was reached in 2005 – 747 thousand people, and in 2011 – 735 thousand.
In 2020, the Geneva exhibition was canceled due to the pandemic, literally a week before it began, and it was a big scandal, because many companies had already spent millions of dollars on the organization.
In 2021 and 2022, the exhibition was canceled again, also due to the pandemic and some legal delays, and in 2023, when the exhibition was supposed to take place from February 14 to 19 at Palexpo Geneva, another postponement came.
