Romania will not participate in Eurovision 2024 due to lack of money. TVR announced that the decision was made by the Administrative Council of Public Television, citing that the budget “does not contain enough funds to guarantee Romania’s participation according to the increasingly high standards of the international competition”.

TVR is the organizer of the Eurovision Song Contest in Romania, covering the costs of Romania’s participation in the contest.

“Financial constraints and the desire to represent Romania at a high level are the reasons why the Board of Directors (CA) decided that TVR will not participate in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC).

The decision was made at today’s meeting, January 25, with 5 votes “for”, 4 “abstentions” and 4 “against”. Also today, the Board of Directors approved the SRTv budget for 2024, which does not contain enough funds to guarantee Romania’s participation in accordance with the increasingly high standards of the international competition,” said the TVR press release.

Public television says it is “allocating significant resources to other productions and priority projects,” including the broadcast of the Summer Olympics in Paris, continuing the reengineering process – automating the broadcast of SRTv channels, and investing in news. production system, continued investment in the new TVR Craiova headquarters and other long-delayed modernization projects.

“Despite the fact that TVR benefited from the extension of the registration deadline for the 2024 contest, due to its traditional cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organizer of the contest, TVR is forced to postpone its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. for the future release.” – reports Public Television.

Eurovision 2024 will be held in the city of Malmö in Sweden, whose representative became the winner of the 2023 contest. Over the years, several countries such as Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina or North Macedonia have decided not to participate in the international competition.

The last Eurovision, in which Romania participated, was held in 2023, but it failed to reach the final. Our country was represented by Teodor Andrej with the song “DGT (Off and on)”, which did not score a single point, which is the weakest result in the entire history of Romania’s participation in Eurovision.
