The automotive industry has been preparing for an electric, less polluting future for years. But the road there is not without potholes. Additionally, various news stories in the industry are fueling fears that an all-electric global fleet may be just a pipe dream.
The recent decisions of Hertz and Spark, unrelated to each other, gave a chance to those who doubted the chances of the development of the trend of electric cars.
US car rental company Hertz, based in Florida, has announced that it is selling 20,000 electric cars from its US fleet, a third of its battery-powered vehicles. In an official statement, he cited high maintenance costs as well as the fact that he could no longer resell the models at reasonable prices for his business model.
At the same time, the Lithuanian company Spark, which has been operating in Romania since 2019 and has a fleet consisting of electric cars, announced an even more radical measure: withdrawal from the Romanian market. There are currently no similar announcements for the other European markets in which it operates.
