“I’ve always been adamantly against cryptocurrencies, bitcoin and others,” the head of the largest U.S. bank by assets said when asked by Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren during a Senate Banking Committee hearing.

“The only case of its real use is criminals, drug dealers… money laundering, tax evasion,” he said.

“If I were the government, I would close them down,” he added.

The remarks are Dimon’s latest attacks on cryptocurrencies, although his bank is heavily involved in blockchain, the technology that underpins the $1.6 trillion industry.

In earlier statements, Dimon called Bitcoin a “bloated scam”, a comment he later retracted. He also compared her to a “stone pet”.

Under further questioning from Warren, Dimon and several other major banking executives who appeared before the committee as part of routine industry hearings agreed that crypto companies should face the same anti-money laundering rules as large financial institutions. The issue marked a rare note of unity between bank leaders and Warren, usually a harsh critic of the industry.

“When it comes to banking policy, I don’t usually talk to the heads of multibillion-dollar banks, but this is a matter of national security. Terrorists, drug traffickers and rogue countries should be banned from using cryptocurrency for their dangerous activities. It is time for Congress to act,” Warren said.
