The Ministry of Energy has announced that it will replace coal at the Parosheni thermal power plant with biomass. In particular, for energy production, the plant will burn biomass instead of traditional coal. It was for this purpose that a memorandum was signed between the Ministry of Energy and the American company on Monday.

“The Ministry of Energy announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 27, 2023 at 12:00 p.m., thus strengthening the Romanian-American strategic partnership in the field of mineral extraction and renewable energy in the Jului Valley region,” the Ministry of Energy reports.

Paroshenska power station is waiting for transformation

The memorandum was signed by the Ministry of Energy, Societatea Complexul Energetic “Valea Jiului” SA and American Bio-Carbon Delaware LLC. The project aims to transform the Paroşeni thermal power plant located in Vala Điului with biofuel produced by American Bio-Carbon from sustainable Romanian biomass, thus replacing traditional coal.

This initiative is an important step in the implementation of the economic, social and ecological development strategy of the Jiu Valley for the period 2022-2030, approved by Decision no. 901/2022, the Ministry of Energy claims.

He also says that the purpose of this Memorandum is to create a basis for cooperation in order to transform the Paroshensk thermal power plant into a modern facility that uses biofuel instead of coal.

American BioCarbon is an American company specializing in reducing CO2 emissions through the use of renewable bioproducts.

The Americans are not the first investors that the Ministry of Energy is trying to attract

In November 2021, former energy minister Virgil Popescu signed a letter of intent with Norwegian company Arbaflame to make CET’s operations in Paroshen CO2 sustainable.

The letter of intent provided for the replacement of coal, which is the basis of the Paroshenska power plant, with pellets produced by Arbaflame, and in the long term also included the construction of a plant for the production of these pellets in Romania.

The Parosheni power station also underwent environmental investments

In 2018, the Ministry of Energy claimed that the Parosheni thermal power plant operates in accordance with the environmental values established by European legislation. After an investment of EUR 65.3 million, the Parosheni thermal power plant was equipped with a desulfurization plant that removes 94% of SO2 emissions, as Energynomics.ro revealed in August 2018.

“We are happy that in CE Hunedoara we have the first energy production company that complies with European environmental legislation. This has a double meaning. On the one hand, the Parosheni thermal power plant will be supplied with coal from Vala Giului, and on the other hand, any step taken by Romania’s coal-fired power plants to comply with environmental requirements ensures an equally diversified energy balance in the future,” said the then Minister of Energy, Anton Anton, quoted by Energynomics.ro.

The investment was financed by a loan from the EIB, BCR and EBRD, and the work was performed by the CNIM-LAB consortium.
