2023 was the best year for Tesla Motors in Romania, a year that will end with more than 3,000 new cars registered. The overall EV market grew by 51% in the first ten months, and the overall car market in Romania grew by 15%, according to APIA data.

APIA data shows that sales of electric cars in Romania increased by 51% to almost 13,000, of which 5,800 were Dacia Spring and 2,800 Tesla. Volkswagen is in third place with more than 1,200 units. Tesla Model Y found almost 1,800 customers, and Model 3 – 800 cars.

Renault had a strong year in electrics, tripling sales compared to 2022, while BMW climbed 52%. In the electric top 5, Hyundai is down 10% compared to the first ten months of 2022.

The total car market in Romania grew by 15% in the first ten months, to 121,000 units, including petrol, diesel and hybrid cars. Of them, 39,000 were Dacia, and three brands had from 8,700 to 9,000 cars each: Skoda, Renault and Toyota. Suzuki had an extremely successful year, up 112%, while at the opposite pole, Ford fell 28%.

Gasoline cars occupied 63% of the market, and diesel – less than 13%. SUVs occupy 43% of the total market, and C-class cars – 29%. Almost a quarter of new cars sold in Romania this year have four-wheel drive.

The five best-selling new models on the market include Dacia, with Logan in first place with 12,100 units. The five best-selling models of foreign brands are: Skoda Octavia, Renault Megane, Renault Clio, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Tucson.

Electric vehicles account for almost 11% of the total market, compared to 8% a year ago.
