Nuclearelectrica announced on Tuesday that it has been awarded a contract to supply reactor tools and components, as well as engineering and process services necessary to extend the life of the CANDU reactor at CNE Cernavodă Unit 1. The contract is valued at 750 million Canadian dollars (equivalent to 545 million US dollars) and will be awarded to AtkinsRéalis.

Nuclearelectrica sent a contract award notice to Candu Energy Inc. (CEI), AtkinsRéalis (SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.) and Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), a federal government corporation.

In 2029, power unit No. 1 will be like new

CNE Cernavodă Power Unit 1 was put into commercial operation in 1996, has an installed capacity of 700 MW and in 27 years of operation has supplied 138,388,129 MWh to the national power system at a capacity factor of more than 90%, according to Nuclearelectrica.

After reconstruction in 2029, CNE Cernavodă Unit 1 will continue to generate approximately 5 TW/year and avoid 5 million tons of CO2 emissions per year, as nuclear power has the lowest carbon footprint of any source over its entire life cycle.

“As an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of CANDU nuclear technology, we are proud that this solution, which is used, tested and developed in Canada – which has been so effective at home and abroad – has also provided Romanians with emission-free, cost-effective and uninterrupted electricity for generations, ensuring their continued energy independence and serving as an excellent model for the rest of Eastern Europe,” said Ian L. Edwards, President and Chief Executive Officer of AtkinsRéalis.

AtkinsRéalis holds an exclusive license to CANDU

As the exclusive licensee of CANDU’s intellectual property portfolio, AtkinsRéalis has been involved as a lead in all CANDU reactor life extension projects to date worldwide, according to Nuclearelectrica.

Such projects are implemented in Asia, North and South America. AtkinsRéalis’ current work on CANDU reactor life extension projects in Ontario includes 10 reactors at Darlington and Bruce Power.

The signing of the contract is expected in the coming weeks, and its entry into force is subject to the approval of the General Meeting of Shareholders of SNN and the completion of the approval procedures of the Government of Canada.

CANDU is a registered trademark of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, used under exclusive license by Candu Energy Inc., a subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. which operates under the name AtkinsRéalis.
