Romania’s railway infrastructure is a black spot that is expanding every day. We have neglected the railways for decades, and recently they are being used more and more as traffic becomes more intense, caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Therefore, it is not surprising that railway accidents have become a constant presence in newscasts. This is while passenger train delays have already entered local folklore, adding tens or hundreds of minutes to each journey.

Waiting for European money, the railway found itself at the center of the perfect storm of 2023, which foreshadowed a nationwide infrastructure disaster.

This year, breaking news about train accidents came in more often than ever. In March, a 53-year-old station master died in Galaka after a very serious railway accident, during which the locomotive went out of control and stopped braking. According to the investigation, the needle of the locomotive’s speedometer was stuck at the mark of 75 kilometers per hour.

Two weeks earlier, the driver of a passenger train ran a red light at Rosiori station and crashed into a freight train full of new cars. Passengers had a chance to activate the emergency braking system to avoid the tragedy.
