
Traveling abroad can be expensive, but not all destinations are. There are countries whose currency has fallen significantly against the lei in the last two years, making it financially viable to travel there, at least compared to two years ago.
According to BNR data, our rating is based on the appreciation of the lei between the third quarter of 2023 and the third quarter of 2021.
1. Turkey
According to Numbeo, estimated monthly expenses per person are around 2,300 lei (13,981.5 TL) without rent. The cost of living in Turkey is on average 5.2% lower than in Romania.
Turkey is the leading holiday destination both globally and domestically, with an estimated 51.4 million tourists visiting last year alone. A significant part of these tourists is attracted by Istanbul, as well as Cappadocia.
2. Egypt
Estimated monthly expenses per person are 1,600 lei without rent. Cost of living in Egypt is on average 37.4% lower than in Romania. According to Numbeo, rents in Egypt are on average 60.8% lower than in Romania.
Next up are Ukraine and Russia, countries that are in a state of military conflict and therefore difficult to recommend for travel.
3. Japan
The appreciation of the lei against the yen by almost 20% makes a trip there more profitable now than in the fall of 2021.
Estimated monthly expenses per person are 3,707.8 lei without rent. Although the lei has appreciated against the yen, the cost of living in Japan is on average 33.2% higher than in Romania, according to Numbeo.
4. South Africa
Have you ever wanted to go on a safari? That dream may be more feasible now than it was two years ago. South Africa is home to one of the most famous safari destinations in the world – the Kruger National Park – and has a thriving safari industry. If you’re not into safaris, don’t worry, South Africa also offers rock climbing, hiking and adventure on the Western Cape Garden Route, world-famous vineyards or gorgeous cities and gorgeous beaches.
Estimated monthly expenses per person are about 2,500 lei, excluding rent. The cost of living in South Africa is on average 8.3% lower than in Romania.
