The train journey from Romania to Vienna is very long, especially since recently the Dacia train is limited to Budapest if it arrives more than an hour late. From October 27 to November 17, there will no longer be direct trains to Vienna due to large-scale works in Hungary.
There are two direct trains to Vienna from Romania: Dacia, Bucharest – Arad – Vienna and the direct train Cluj – Budapest – Vienna.
Recently, MAV has been restricting the route of the 346 CFR Călători train to Budapest in case of a delay of more than an hour. Passengers, including those in sleeping or sleeping cars, are disembarked and forced to board another train to continue their journey to the Austrian capital.
Due to the fact that works are being carried out on the Deva – Arad route, the Dacia train runs during this period on a detour via Cluj and Oradea and accumulates daily delays (i) in Romania. For example, on Tuesday, the train arrived in Bucharest 110 minutes late. Delays are usually added on the route Brasov – Sighisoara, as well as in the area of Tejus – Koslariu.
Because it spends a lot of time at customs and because there are many slow sections, the train Vienna – Bucharest – via Bishopric of Bihor – Cluj – takes more than 21 hours, traveling this longer route of 1150 km.
The Hungarians will close traffic on the main highway to Vienna for three weeks, so Romanian trains going to Austria will be limited to Budapest, and from there – buses.
From Budapest to Vienna is 272 km, the fastest trains take 2 hours 37 minutes with 3-4 stops, the fastest part is in Austria: an average of 120 km/h. In Hungary, repairs are badly needed and several sites will be closed.
What CFR Călători says about traffic closures on the route Budapest – Vienna

For travel on international trains Dacia IR 12348/12347 and Transilvania IR 146/143 between October 27 and November 17, 2023, holders of international identity cards, including seat reservations, can use reservations to/from Budapesta Keleti station. However, the travel permit is valid up to the final destination indicated on the ticket, to continue the journey on other trains running from the metro to the transfer Budapest Keleti – Budapest Kälenfold and the car transfer between Budapest Kälenfold – Tatabanya and back. .
For passengers going to/from Vienna, the Hungarian railway administration MAV Start intends to provide car services between Solnók-Tatabanya stations and return, bypassing Budapest, without stopping in the capital. Regarding the implementation of this intention by the Hungarian partner, we will return with information as soon as it is given to us.
Passengers are asked to familiarize themselves with the updated train schedule before traveling.
