HMD Global, the company that makes Nokia-branded phones, has opened an assembly facility in Hungary, becoming the first major phone brand to have production in the EU. But we are talking about a small production of a 5G phone that costs 650 euros.

HMD Global has production lines in China and India and has focused mostly on entry-level and retro phones in recent years.

At the moment, the Nokia XR21 5G model is manufactured in Hungary, which is mainly aimed at business customers, and although no figures have been provided, these are clearly small volumes, so we cannot talk about a clear trend of moving a large part of production to Europe.

HMD Global decided to assemble the phones in Hungary mainly for reasons of safety and durability.

Phones made in a neighboring country are mainly addressed to business customers who want devices that will house important corporate information not to be made in China. The company stores customer data in the EU, and will move its data centers here in 2019.
