Microsoft has announced that it will make some changes and compromises to try to satisfy the demands of Brussels, which launched an investigation in July to find out whether the American giant abused its dominant position.
Microsoft has proposed separating the Teams video conferencing app from the Office suite (which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook). Microsoft will introduce this branch in the EU and Switzerland.
It is unclear whether this change, which Microsoft voluntarily announced, will be enough for the EC to drop its investigation. Sources quoted by the Financial Times said the pledge was not enough to “settlement” the dispute.
How did it all begin? In 2020, the American company Slack complained that Microsoft has an advantage over the Teams application, and competing programs are at a disadvantage.
The Office 360 package will have a lower price than now, when it will no longer include Teams, and Teams will be available for purchase on its own for €5/month (€60/year).
Microsoft also promised to make it easier for competing applications to interact with the company’s systems.
