For the first time in history, immigrants who come to work in Romania are the main reason for the growth of the Romanian population, the National Institute of Statistics points out on Wednesday.

The number of immigrants exceeded the number of Romanians who left the country by approximately 85,000 people.

During 2022, the majority of emigrants are men (50.2%). And among the immigrants, men were the majority (53.3%).

As of January 1, 2023, the permanent population was 19.05 million people, having increased by 9,107 people compared to January 1, 2022.

From the graph above, it can be seen that the age at which most people emigrate to Romania (at the level of 2022) is 30-34 years, followed by the 20-24 and 25-29 age groups.

As of January 1, 2023, the urban population was about 10 million people, which is 0.3% less compared to January 1, 2022. The female population on January 1, 2023 was 9.8 million people, which is 0.01% less compared to the same date in 2023. previous year

The process of demographic aging has deepened, compared to January 1, 2022, there is an increase in the share of the elderly population (aged 65 and over) by 0.3 percentage points. (from 19.4% in 2022 to 19.7% on January 1, 2023). The share of the population aged 0-14 in the total population remained at 16.2%. The demographic aging index increased from 120.0 (as of January 1, 2022) to 122.0 elderly persons per 100 young persons (as of January 1, 2023).

The demographic dependency ratio increased from 55.5 (as of January 1, 2022) to 56.1 youth and elderly persons per 100 adults (as of January 1, 2023).

For statistics, emigrants are people who emigrate abroad for a period of at least 12 months;

Immigrants are those who come to Romania for at least one year. During the conflict in Ukraine, on the basis of additional explanations developed by Eurostat, citizens of Ukraine who received a form of temporary international protection are also taken into account when measuring the phenomenon of immigration.

Thus, immigrants include:
