Politicians forget about research, development, innovation. Romania is very bad here. It is impossible to make a green transition without research, development, innovation, said Roxana Bojariou, researcher, head of the climate department of the ANM.

“Last year, about 0.2% of GDP was allocated to research, and we had 0.8% of GDP for special pensions, that is, 4 times more,” she said.

  • “Scientific knowledge is not something that should be imposed, but something that should be used. In Romania, it is unfortunately not based on scientific knowledge.”

“We have additional challenges related to the lack of vision, and especially the problem of the academic research system, which is completely ignored by politicians. There is chronic underfunding,” said Roxana Boyariu.

Politicians need to realize, she said, that you can’t make an environmental transition without local research, “don’t let Brussels come to tell you what to do in your garden”.

  • “The decision has to be based on scientific information, the best scientific knowledge at this point in time as it develops, and despite the idea that we already know it’s global warming and no more research is needed, that’s not the case.
  • why Next to the very important part of reducing emissions, to slow down and have time to adapt, comes the adaptation part.”

“Global warming is not uniform in space and time. You cannot take the Barcelona model for Bucharest. You have to explore all these nuances that local factors in Romania bring to climate change, plus we have new generations of models that are coming in and limiting the uncertainties,” Bojariu explained.

  • “We have new scenarios that show how things will develop that we can move between. We will always have to update scientific knowledge to make a decision.”
