
Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu said on Wednesday that work at the construction site of the Apaca-Kaza railway line is registering “extremely low progress”, reaching only 17.5%, writes News.ro. The work on the site, where the longest tunnel in Romania will be built, will cost more than 600 million euros.
The distance between Apatsa and Katsa is 43 km, and due to numerous speed restrictions, trains run for more than an hour and there are delays.
“We have requested the management of CFR Infrastructure to take all necessary measures to complete the rehabilitation work by the end of next year,” the minister said.
“Extremely poor progress at the construction site of the Apatsa-Katz railway line (28.2 km), part of the Rhine-Danube railway corridor. The contract, signed in 2020, has reached only 17.5% physical progress and further delays are expected. We have requested the management of CFR Infrastructura to take all necessary measures to complete the rehabilitation works by the end of next year (2024). If the situation does not improve, I expect strong contractual sanctions to be applied,” Sorin told Grindean on Facebook on Wednesday.
He emphasized that this is an important project for Romanian and European railway transport, which the association of Greek, French and Romanian construction companies “must take with utmost seriousness”.
About the section Apața – Cată
This is the most difficult, but also the most expensive section, the cost of 28 km will be more than 600 million euros, as the route will be heavily modified. Thus, now there is 43 km between the two cities through a winding track, and after the modernization, the line will be only 28 km.
More precisely, this section envisages a new route for the railway line from Transylvania, eliminating the loop that the old railway makes in the area of Apaca – Ormenis – Augustin – Rakos. Thus, after Apața station, the railway route “returns” to the west through the Ormeniș tunnel, avoiding the loop that passed the Augustin area. The new route, immediately after Racoș station, will no longer make a “detour” to Rupea, but will go straight through Khomorod tunnel.
The project envisages the construction of three tunnels, two of which have a considerable length:
– Khomorod tunnel – 5 km
– Mureni tunnel – 700 meters
