Dacia has an electric Spring model that is made in China, but the important moment will come in 2027 or 2028, when the Sandero will also get electric traction and will also have the attributes of an SUV. There is new information about the electric Sandero, the model that will be the cheapest in class B. What is known about the car?
Last year, Dacia sold 229,000 Sandero vehicles, making this model the best-selling car in Europe among private customers.
The first generation of Sandero was released in 2008, the second in 2013, and the third in 2020. In the next generation, in 2027 or 2028, the Sandero will receive an electric drive, confirmed Denis Le Vot, CEO of the Dacia brand, as quoted by Autocar UK. The car will be replaced in 2034-2035.
This is not the first information about the electric Sandero, a model that has the potential to sell more than the Spring because it will be a more spacious car, so it will also be suitable for families.
A big bet will be included in the price. The Dacia Spring starts at €21,000 before subsidies, but the Spring is a city car that isn’t suitable for long journeys. The electric Sandero will be such a car, we don’t know how much it will cost, Dacia officials have NOT given a target price, but ideally the basic version (with minimal features) would cost €20,000 without subsidies. Whether it will be possible to reach this price is unknown.
As far as autonomy is concerned, we can estimate that the electric Sandero will be able to drive around 300 km on average.
In the current Sandero, 70% of customers choose the Stepway variant with higher ground clearance. It’s possible that the all-electric Sandero will be a sort of Stepway, that is, with higher ground clearance, and Dacia will insist, as it does with the Jogger (and as it will do with the Bigster), that the car will be useful, practical and also suitable for forays to nature (vacations, hikes).
The Dacia Spring weighs 1,045 kg and is 3.73 meters long, while the Sandero is 4.09 meters long and weighs 1,150 kg. The battery on the spring weighs 280 kg.
Dacia’s head of design, David Durand, said the future Sandero will be distinctly different from the current car, but it will also follow Dacia’s new design trend. He clarified that Sandero will remain a hatchback and will not turn into an SUV.
The condition is that Dacia keeps the price as low as possible, several thousand euros below the competition, and for this the technical characteristics will not be as impressive as its “electric” competitors in the segment.
Denis le Vot says the range will be lower than other B-segment competitors and charging times will be longer because “we want lower prices for customers.”
Le Vot said that Dacia will NOT compete with the electric Sandero for 500-600km range or charging in just 20 minutes at a speed station.
A Dacia official says that the starting prices of the best-selling electric cars, 35,000, 40,000, 45,000 euros, are prohibitive for many customers and an obstacle to sales volumes. Dacia should offer a more affordable alternative in the segment, and this could mean that the electric Sandero could have a smaller battery than other cars in the group that will be built on the CMF-BEV architecture (such as the Renault 5).
Le Vot says a sodium-based battery could be tried to lower the overall cost of the battery.
