Figures released Wednesday by Eurostat show that 34% of Romanians were at risk of poverty and social exclusion in 2022, the highest rate among EU member states last year. Romania is followed by Bulgaria with 32%.

According to Eurostat, the highest proportion of people at risk of poverty and social exclusion were recorded in Romania (34%), Bulgaria (32%), Greece and Spain (both with 26%). On the other hand, the smallest shares were recorded in the Czech Republic (12%), Slovenia (13%) and Poland (16%).

In 2022, 95.3 million people in the EU (22% of the population) were at risk of poverty and social exclusion, therefore living in households that were in at least one of three situations: at risk of poverty, deprivation, difficult material and social conditions and/ or lived in a household with very low labor intensity.

According to Eurostat, the figures remained relatively stable compared to 2021, when 95.4 million people in the EU (22% of the population) were at risk of poverty and social exclusion.
