For years, there have been rumors about the first virtual reality headset that Apple will release, and it will happen on June 5 at its annual developer conference. There have been many rumors about this “mixed reality” headset in recent months, including that it could cost $3,000.
June 5th is going to be a historic day because we’re talking about a brand new product that has high expectations for years to come, especially with VR apps and the metaverse still being talked about.
Several models of virtual reality headsets have been released in recent years, but they are expensive and do NOT sell in large numbers.
Apple is in no rush to release a “VR headset”, although it has been working on various concepts for several years. The company has tested several types of designs, and Bloomberg writes that the new gadget, called “Reality” or “Reality Pro,” will take the form of “ski goggles” filled with sensors.
Cited sources also report that Apple has been working on the device for seven years, and the concept has changed significantly since the first ideas that described the terminal as having the shape of glasses.
The terminal will have many sensors on the outside and inside, and will also track head movements. The headphones will work independently, so there will be no need to put the phone inside, as it happens in other models. Bloomberg also writes that this VR headset will be connected by a cable to a set of batteries.
Sources say Apple has created VR versions of apps like Safari, FaceTime, Apple TV, Apple Books and Freeform.
This is a risky launch for Apple because we are talking about a very expensive product that costs a lot to develop and for which commercial success is not guaranteed. However, the category is a supply, especially since many predict that the number of those willing to buy such VR devices will increase significantly.
Sources cited by Bloomberg also report that Apple is also working on cheaper versions of the device, but they won’t launch this year.
At its big WWDC developer conference, Apple is expected to unveil NOT only a VR headset, but a dedicated operating system for it, as well as a software development kit and a platform for programmers to build apps.
