Masses hiresmainly in tourism and food, but also a significant limitation layoffs during the previous month of April, show data on registered unemployment published monthly State Employment Service (DYPA). The start of tourism appears to have been accompanied by a significant influx of tourists, resulting in registered unemployed will decrease to 927,793 people, which is 7.1% less (70,529 fewer unemployed) compared to the corresponding month of last year. The decrease reaches 107,787 people (-10.4%) when compared with the immediately preceding month, March. However, according to high-ranking officials of the Service, there has also been a sharp reduction in the number of unemployed, i.e. reducing the number of layoffs. This explains the sharp decline in subsidized unemployed, especially those employed in seasonal industries.
Thus, in April, the number of subsidized unemployed was only 55,438 people, which decreased by 139,927 people compared to the previous month (-71.6%), but also by 92,627 people (-62.6%) compared to April 2022. As a result, the number of subsidized unemployed has declined. well below 10% of the total number of unemployed and, in particular, only 5.9% of those registered. In fact, DYPA data shows that only 14,749 subsidized unemployed are in the tourism sector (26.6% of the total), a decrease of 43,609 from the previous month, April 2023.
Despite the decline in the unemployment rate, almost six out of ten unemployed people have been out of the labor market for more than 12 months.
April of this year can only be compared with April 2012, when the registered unemployed at that time UAED they reached 932,556, i.e. fluctuated at about the same levels as this year.
This highly positive job market image, with many hirings and fewer layoffs, is expected to improve further given the data announced by management DOUBLE in previous days (provoking a reaction from the Service staff, mainly due to the fact that vaccinations were made even before the announcement of the April figures), according to which, as of May 16, the number of registered unemployed people decreased to 858,321 people.
In terms of qualitative data from registered unemployment, women remain the biggest victims with 602,814 representing a percentage of 65% compared to 324,979 men (35.0%). Also, 32.9% of DYPA unemployed are in the 30-44 age group, numbering 305,630 people. Almost half of the registered unemployed, namely 47.4% or 439,670 people, have completed secondary education, while in relation to the regions of the country, as expected, Attica and Central Macedonia have the largest number of registered people – 309,582 people (33.4% ). and 181,876 people (19.6%), respectively. Despite the decline in unemployment, one cannot ignore the fact that almost six out of 10 unemployed, namely 517,698 people, i.e. 55.8% of the total are out of the labor market for more than 12 months.
