TSMC, the Taiwanese giant that is the world’s number one in the production of microprocessors, may open a mega-factory in Europe, a possible investment of 10 billion euros. The final decision has not yet been made, but if the plant exists, it will be in Germany, after significant subsidies from the state.
This is reported by Bloomberg, adding that TSMC will build a megafactory in the state of Saxony in partnership with several large companies: Bosch, Infineon Technologies and NXP Semiconductors.
In 2021, TSMC officials said they would be interested in manufacturing facilities in Europe, with the automotive industry as the main area of interest.
The EU has launched a plan to stimulate the production of microprocessors in the Union, and for some projects, subsidies can reach 40% of the total investment cost.
The area of the German city of Dresden will become increasingly important in the field of processor manufacturing and component suppliers. Factories for the production of microcircuits require huge investments and very expensive industrial equipment. Substantial investment will be required to reduce dependence on Asian manufacturing.
