On March 30, 2023, the European Parliament adopted a number of mandatory measures on transparency and equality in pay at a plenary session. Consequently, the new legislation will require EU companies to disclose useful information to employees in order to be able to compare salaries and identify the pay gap between women and men.
- 50% of Romanian workers know the salaries of their colleagues, and 38% of those who do not know would like to receive information about this
- Every second employee has heard about the measures adopted by the European Parliament on transparency and equal pay
- 46% of workers say there is a gender pay gap for similar positions at their current job
According to Reveal Marketing Research, 50% of Romanian workers say they know their co-workers’ salaries, with a much smaller percentage for workers over 55 (35%). If we pay attention to the other half of employees who do not know the salaries of others, then 38% of them say that they would like to have information about this.
Young people under the age of 35 are most interested in the salaries of their colleagues
There is a gradual decrease in interest in receiving information about the salaries of other colleagues with increasing age, with the most interested youth aged 18-24 (58%) to 25-35 (45%), and at the opposite pole the most disinterested mature people over 55 years old (28%). This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that, in general, young people are more actively looking for opportunities for development and attractive financial benefits, while mature people value stability and reliability of work more.
Other significant differences appear if we refer to the area of residence or gender, both representatives of the urban environment (40% vs. 30% of rural areas) and women (43% vs. 33% of men) showing a greater desire for salary transparency. .
5 out of 10 Romanian workers have heard about measures on transparency and equal pay adopted by the European Parliament
Based on the objectives of combating pay discrimination in the workplace and closing the gender pay gap (which in 2020 in the EU reached 13% in relation to women), the European Parliament adopted a number of measures on transparency and equality in pay.
In this context, half of Romanian workers (47%) state that they have heard about these measures adopted by the European Parliament. If we take a closer look, we can see that men (52% vs. 42% of women) and urban dwellers (50% vs. 36% in the countryside) are more informed.
In addition, 46% of workers say they have seen a gender pay disparity for similar positions at their current job, significantly more among workers in urban areas (48% vs. 36% in rural areas). On the other hand, 43% note that they did not notice such a difference in salary, especially those who are over 55 years old (61%), and 11% admit that they do not know information about this.
