Kiev sent a formal note on what it said were Polish trade restrictions on imports of agricultural products. The EU agreed in principle to a deal to ship some goods to neighboring countries.

Ukraine has protested what it described as “categorically unacceptable” bans on the transit of its agricultural products through neighboring Poland, as the war continues to challenge production routes out of the country.

The Foreign Ministry said on Saturday it had sent a formal note to Polish and European Union representatives in the country a day earlier about the bans.

Poland and other Ukrainian neighbors recently imposed temporary trade barriers on grain and other goods. The bans followed protests from local farmers following a drop in prices for local produce.

In the note, the Ukrainian ministry argued that the restrictions do not comply with the Association Agreement between Kiev and the EU, as well as the rules of the EU Single Market.

“There are complete legal grounds for the immediate resumption of exports of Ukrainian agricultural products to Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria, as well as the continuation of unimpeded exports to other EU member states,” it continued.
