Last year, 9,670 tourists from Russia visited our country, the economy was fueled by more than 25.6 million lei, that is, more than 5 million euros, or 500 euros per person, according to Romanian statistics.

The most “spending” tourists were tourists who came from South Africa, each of whom left more than 5,400 lei in the economy, and the most frugal were Hungarians, Ukrainians and Filipinos who visited us. South Koreans, Brazilians and Indians are the second highest spenders in Romania, followed by Norwegian Cypriots and Japanese, INS data also shows.

In 2022, we were visited by 1.6 million foreign tourists who spent over 4.28 billion lei

Foreign tourists arriving in Romania for business purposes spent 2.36 billion lei. The total number of non-residents was 1579.7 thousand, and their expenses amounted to 4.28 billion lei.

Business (including participation in congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions) was the main reason for the stay of 51.8% of non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania in 2022, their expenses accounted for 55.3% of total expenses, corresponding to 2.3 billion lei Of the total business expenses in 2022, the main weight will be accommodation expenses (49.5%), among this type of expenses, accommodation with breakfast is a special advantage (87.5% of the total accommodation expenses).

Expenditures of out-of-town tourists in restaurants and bars accounted for 18.5%, and for shopping – 14.7% of total business expenses. Of the total shopping expenses, 50.0% was for food and beverages, and 27.3% was for gifts and souvenirs, the INS notes.

Car rental expenditures accounted for 65.0% of total transportation expenditures, and expenditures for entrance tickets to museums, tourist attractions, zoos/botanical gardens accounted for 30.4% of total leisure expenditures.

Foreign tourists arriving in Romania for private purposes spent 1.9 billion lei.

The largest share of the total expenses incurred by non-resident tourists who come to Romania for private purposes is accommodation (45.5%), among this type of expenses, accommodation with breakfast is particularly predominant (79.2% of the total accommodation expenses) . Expenditures of out-of-town tourists on shopping made up 16.6%, and in restaurants and bars – 15.4% of total expenses for private purposes.

Of the total shopping expenses, 38.3% was for the purchase of food and beverages, 30.9% for clothes and shoes. Expenditures for access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos, and arcades accounted for 53.8% of total recreation expenditures, while car rental expenditures accounted for 56.6% of total transportation expenditures.

Foreign tourists who came to Romania in private accommodation units (apartments and rooms for rent) spent 76.2 million lei.

The number of out-of-town tourists who lived in private accommodation units (apartments and rooms for rent) in 2022 was 82.7 thousand, their expenses in Romania amounted to 76.2 million lei.

Among the total expenses incurred in Romania by non-resident tourists who stayed in private accommodation units in 2022, the following stand out: accommodation expenses (34.6%), expenses made in bars and restaurants (32.8%), expenses for transport (15.6%) and expenses for the purchase of products for personal use (11.4%).

Out of the total number of out-of-town tourists who stayed in private accommodation facilities (renting apartments and rooms) in 2022, 81.3% had the purpose of traveling for private purposes, and 18.7% for business purposes. Among trips with a private purpose, trips for recreation (83.1%) accounted for a greater share, and for official and business purposes – for business (79.1%).

In 2022, out-of-town tourists who lived in private accommodation facilities (renting apartments and rooms) mostly organized a trip to Romania on their own (77.3% of the total number). They chose their own car (51.7%), plane (19.5%), bus (3.6%) and other modes of transport (25.2%) as means of transport.
