Xiaomi, one of the largest manufacturers of mobile phones, gadgets and consumer electronics, presented a plan to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the name “Zero Carbon Philosophy”. Xiaomi says it will achieve a reduction in carbon emissions through research and development of clean technologies, expansion of e-waste management methods and implementation of green operations and logistics.
“The goal of the Xiaomi Zero-carbon Philosophy is to increase the efficiency and affordability of its products while reducing the carbon footprint of its products and services. Xiaomi will continue to focus on using low-carbon technologies to create a positive impact on the climate and promote a greener lifestyle and a low-carbon society,” the company’s press release said.
Xiaomi says it set its first greenhouse gas reduction target in 2021, which aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4.5% per capita from its autonomous campus by 2026 compared to the 2020 benchmark. “As of December 31, 2022, the company has achieved a 21.12% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per capita compared to the base year,” the company notes.
“To support the global goal of net zero by 2050, the company aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with goals 1 and 2:
- Until the last century 2030 yearby reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its main operating segments by at least 70% compared to the base year;
- Until the last century 2040 yearto reduce GHG emissions from its main operating segments at least 98% compared to the level of the base year, with the previous conditions for achieving net zero emissions”;
The company claims that “environmental impact has been reduced in a number of ways, of which four areas have been selected for detailed illustration: clean technology research and development (R&D) and product improvement, as well as the circular economy and e-waste management. “.
Some examples of how Xiaomi says it has managed to reduce its environmental footprint:
– 5G signal transmission technology and energy saving – “Thanks to 5G energy-saving technologies, such as self-adaptive broadband technology and energy optimization technology, Xiaomi has improved the energy-saving efficiency of its smartphones. Advanced WLAN chips combined with WLAN power monitoring and dynamic transfer technology have reduced smartphone power consumption by approximately 30% compared to the previous generation.”
– Energy-efficient display technology – “By switching to dark mode, which turns the phone’s background black, display power consumption can be reduced by up to 70% when using certain applications.”
– Charging technology – “In 2022, more than 100 million smart devices and terminals used Xiaomi’s fast charging technologies, saving almost 57 million kWh of energy consumption and 24,852 tons of CO2e emissions compared to conventional fast charging technology.”
– Environmentally friendly packaging – Xiaomi changed the packaging for its ecosystem products from folding boxes to flat cardboard boxes and removed the plastic handles. Thanks to this modernization, the company reduced the use of paper packaging by an average of 0.3 m2 and got rid of approximately 80 grams of plastic per product.
– Recycling and disposal – “In 2022, Xiaomi recycled approximately 4,500 tons of e-waste, including smartphones. From 2022 to 2026, the company has committed to recycle 38,000 tons of e-waste and use 5,000 tons of recycled material in its products.”
– Recovery and reuse – “The company aims to promote the development of the circular economy by restoring used products. In 2022, its refurbishing plant processed approximately 94,000 smartphones, 5,600 electric scooters and 6,200 smart TVs, all of which were sold as certified refurbished products.”
– Increased durability – “Xiaomi takes into account the durability of the material when choosing materials for its products. It has developed wear-resistant ceramic materials and synthetic silicone materials used in many of its smartphones. It has set test standards for dust resistance, water resistance and drop resistance that exceed international standards. In 2022, Xiaomi launched a long-lasting fully rechargeable battery that has 25% longer life than previous versions.”
