Italy no longer depends on Russian gas, said the Minister of Environment and Energy Security of Italy, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, which was quoted by The Kyiv Independent.

“We used to get 40% of our gas needs from Russia, but today we rely on them for just over 10%. In this way, we have successfully reduced our dependence on Moscow,” Picetto Fratin told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Italy has increased its gas imports from the East through the Trans-Adriatic pipeline, as well as from Africa thanks to newly concluded agreements with Algeria and Libya, Fratin also said.

Italy is also looking “to get more and more energy produced from renewable sources and to understand when it becomes possible to implement fourth-generation nuclear power,” an Italian official said.

In February, Italian Economy Minister Adolfo Urso told Il Messaggero that his country plans to be completely free of Russian gas by the end of 2023.

In addition, according to Urso, the strategic partnership with Azerbaijan will ideally allow Italy to export energy to other countries by 2024 and become an “energy center” in Europe.
