The coronavirus pandemic has almost completely changed the labor market both in Romania and abroad. Remote work is becoming more and more common, and returning to the office has become a habit, the restoration of which is still an uphill battle between companies and employees.

However, the phenomenon of remote work has led to some situations where employees practically cheat their employers. This applies to those who work underground without the knowledge of the employer.

In particular, these employees can work remotely, in accordance with employment contracts, provided that they do so assumedly, declared and only with the consent of the employer. However, some have chosen to disregard these contractual provisions and work from another country without the company’s consent for reasons mainly related to the cost of living.

We can call them secret digital nomads who only want to optimize their costs, just like the companies they work for. “Panorama” talked to several such employees, their real names and the companies they work for have not been disclosed. However, by doing it in secret, outside of contracts, they expose themselves to risks, say experts contacted by Panorama.
