Toyota Motor aims to bring 10 new models of battery electric vehicles to market by 2026, an executive said Friday, as the Japanese automaker looks to catch up with other major automakers in the electric vehicle market, CNBC reported.
Toyota will also create a new specialized unit to focus on battery electric vehicles and plans to produce 1.5 million battery-powered vehicles annually by 2026, Hiroki Nakajima, the company’s chief technical officer, said at a briefing.
The increase would mark a significant evolution from Toyota’s current level of EVs.
The Japanese automaker, the world’s biggest by sales, has dismissed criticism that it has been too slow to introduce battery-powered vehicles.
