The telecommunications infrastructure has become one of the most important factors for economic development and the improvement of the daily lives of citizens, and the new generation telecommunications networks open up new opportunities in critical areas such as work, health, education and entrepreneurship.
What most people may not know is that the vast majority of the world’s intercontinental data, around 99%, is transmitted over the undersea cables that power the Internet. They are integral parts of the connectivity chain that increases the available bandwidth of the Internet, meets the current and future demands of growing digitalization, and accelerates economic growth.
In this international environment, fixed and mobile phone traffic forecasts for the coming years make it imperative to gradually upgrade the electronic communications infrastructure throughout Greece. In this regard, Vodafone Greece continues the construction of terrestrial and submarine fiber optic cables in the Aegean and Ionian Seas with a total length of 1500 km. An investment with a multiplier value of up to 40 million euros that connects Attica, on the one hand, with the islands of the Cyclades (Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Thira), Dodecanese (Kos and Rhodes) and Crete, and on the other, Corfu with the mainland.
With the installation of the submarine infrastructure on each island, new networks of several kilometers will be created, which will be interconnected by submarine cables and existing terrestrial networks and form the “trunk” of each island, through which the increased telecommunications needs will be met. . When completed, the project will usher in a new era for nearly 1,000,000 residents, thousands of businesses and many millions of visitors across 10 Greek islands, paving the way for access to digital services at speeds up to 1 Gbps through the Vodafone Green Network.
With this new island infrastructure, countries can take advantage of new perspectives in terms of developing digital skills for students and teachers, specialized remote health care, strengthening the manufacturing and commercial activities of enterprises, and working flexibly with speed, reliability and security.
