Entry of French investment interests into Greece Africa Electric Connection Project (GAP), Following the American company McDermott International, leaders of the company Eunice, which is the executive body of the project, said yesterday at a meeting with journalists.
Greek-born American ex-senator Andreas Borgias, who took over as managing director of the GAP project in January, said in his first meeting with the press yesterday that he was in Cairo last week, where he had the opportunity to discuss with corporate schemes the French interests of those who are interested in participating in the project. As noted by his Vice President Eunice Energy Group“Over time, there will be relevant announcements about this.”
The GAP project will connect Matrut in Egypt with Atherinolakko in Crete by two submarine cables 450 km long and over 4,000 meters deep. Undersea cables will carry 2,000 MW of green energy to Crete from photovoltaic and wind farms to be installed in Egypt. The cost of the project is 1.3 billion. Through the second interconnection, which includes the Eunice project and which will connect Crete with Lavrio, almost half of the green energy coming to Crete will be transferred to the country’s continental system. The cost of this second connection is 1.5 billion euros.
According to Mr. Borgeas, the GAP project cannot compete with the Greece-Egypt electrical connection, the GREGY-Elica Interconnector, promoted by the Kopelouzou group. “The competition is being held with Brussels so that the project receives a satisfactory assessment for inclusion in the PCI (Projects of Common Interest) and PMI (Projects of Mutual Interest) list, which the Commission provides financial support to achieve its energy policy. goals and climate,” said Mr. Borgeas, who initiated contacts in Brussels in this direction. He stressed the geopolitical importance of the project and its support from the United States, and also recognized the role that Greece can play as an energy hub in the southeastern Mediterranean .
