
From robots stealing our jobs to us turning into cashiers, a whole controversy erupted when French retailer Auchan announced it would be modernizing all cashier queues in stores, with customers paying themselves as it already happens, in part, in all supermarket chains.
However, whether we like it or not, nobody calls a switchboard today to make outside calls. Even when we board the bus, we no longer go to the fare booth to validate the ticket.
Instead, we use the mobile phone to talk when we want and with whom we want, and paper tickets are long gone. In transport, we pay by card, season ticket or bank card. There are countless examples.
No one died of starvation at the societal level because of these changes, which didn’t happen suddenly anyway. But digitization and automation have gradually entered our lives. And they will do it faster and faster, like any new technology.
