With funding of €5.6 million from Recovery Fund a project to modernize and further strengthen critical national infrastructures for safe management of radioactive waste and effective response to emergencies due to radioactive or nuclear agent. Within the framework of this project, a detailed inventory of radioactive sources, materials and wastes will be carried out. This process, which will be carried out by a specialized company, will complete the elements of a “national list” of radioactive waste, requiring measurements, manipulations and related management work, as well as the supply of related equipment, in particular special storage containers.
At the same time, obsolete or “orphan” radioactive sources and materials that are in temporary storage (until they are finally classified as radioactive waste) and are currently located mainly at the Demokritos CRC will be disposed of.
It also provides for the installation and commissioning of new measuring stations of the radioactivity monitoring telemetry network in the country, the improvement of existing network equipment and the installation of an information system for analyzing and managing network data in normal conditions and emergency situations. . To this end, the Greek state will acquire stations and detectors, including a number of air samplers, i.e. devices that collect atmospheric pollutants and pollution from the atmosphere. Also, about 40 new stations for measuring the telemetric network will be created, obsolete radiation detectors will be replaced at existing stations, and the State will purchase about 5 air samplers capable of taking samples of iodine in the gas phase.
Due to the modernization and compaction of the telemetric network of radiation monitoring in the country in the event of a radiation or nuclear emergency, timely decision-making on measures to protect the population is ensured. In addition, through this particular project, as stated in the decision of the Deputy Minister of Finance, T. Skilakakis, confirming its inclusion in the Recovery Fund, the national policy for the management of radioactive waste for the safety and protection of the public and the environment is implemented and implemented by the prescribed European directives.
