Representatives of Public Television have filed a new complaint against Christian Oprean, a former sports journalist of the channel, for breach of trust and deception, according to a TVR press release. Oprian is accused of making offers totaling €6,600,000 to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) on behalf of SRTv without the authority to do so. The management of TVR became aware of these facts only in January 2023, when Romanian Television received the first invoices related to these liabilities.
According to the cited source, on 15/04/2022, the journalist, who at that time was not the head of sports procurement – he accepted this position without being officially appointed by the management of SRTv – sent and signed on behalf of the institution an attractive offer in the amount of almost seven million euros, related to some sports competitions. The proposal, sent to the EBU’s sports department, concerned the 2023 Women’s Football Championship and the next four Summer and Winter Olympic Games – 2026, 2028, 2030 and 2032.
According to the decision of the Board of Directors (CA) of SRTv, any approval or expenditure up to 100 thousand euros is subject to the decision of the Supervisory Board, while expenditure exceeding this threshold is only approved by the CA.
According to TVR’s press release, TVR’s management became aware of these facts only in January 2023, when Romanian Television received the first invoices related to these liabilities.
Later, the correspondence of the current management of the sports department of Romanian television with the representatives of the relevant department of the EBU revealed the fact that two proposals sent by a former employee of SRTv create financial obligations for public television.
TVR management’s reckless spending has damaged public television, prompting a criminal case against Christian Oprean.
Former sports broadcast and news journalist Cristian Opran resigned from TVR in January 2023 following allegations of buying and selling tickets offered by Qatar Football Championship organizers to Romanian television. TVR also filed a complaint against him alleging Oprean abused his position by buying and transferring to other people tickets issued by FIFA officials to SRTv.
