Dell has announced it will lay off 5% of its workforce, meaning more than 6,000 employees, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. Many tech companies have announced layoffs, and the PC market is set to plunge by a record 28% at the end of 2022.
According to Gartner, Dell’s sales fell 37% from October to December.
Dell had 135,000 employees at the start of 2022, down from a peak of 165,000 at the start of 2020, but the group has shed VMWare, a cloud company that employs more than 30,000 people.
A Dell executive says the cuts are due to market conditions and an uncertain future. The company “froze” hiring, limited employee travel as much as possible, and cut expenses that were not absolutely necessary.
Other computer manufacturers have also cut back. HP announced last November that it would lay off 6,000 people, while Lenovo laid off in the US in December 2022.
