Greeks who prefer to shop online are gradually gaining international status as, in addition to the vote of confidence in domestic online stores, they also look for their purchases outside of Greece.

Today, 87% of Greek consumers shop internationally online, with this percentage being the highest in Europe according to the PayPal E-Commerce Index 2022.

At the same time, 28% of the turnover of Greek online stores comes from foreign countries. Greeks rank first among Europeans with the most internationalized shopping profile, followed by the Irish at 83%, Germans at 82% and Israelis at 4th as the most fanatical online shoppers from abroad at 79%.

Overall, the average number of Europeans buying online from abroad is 74% for 2022.

Greeks prefer to shop online from companies based outside of Greece based on price. In particular, the motivation that encourages them to shop online abroad is mainly the best prices (56%), as well as access to a richer range of products available (42%).

They have the most internationalized trade profile among Europeans, followed by the Irish.

In addition, every third (35%) responds that they prefer to shop in foreign online stores, because they have the opportunity to discover new interesting products that they did not even know existed.

Although the Greeks are the most fanatical Europeans in online shopping abroad, a significant part of consumers are still hesitant to buy goods from another country.

21% of Greeks answered that the main reason why they do not buy abroad is that the market does not deliver goods to Greece. Another 31% admit that they left a purchase on a foreign site unfinished because the payment method in the store did not serve them.

And, of course, one of the main obstacles is the determinant factor of safety, which concerns the lack of consumer confidence in some foreign markets.

Nearly one in three Greeks cite this as the main reason why they do not shop online from stores outside of Greece.
