The Silver Award in the category “Reducing Plastic Waste in the Environment” was awarded to Costa Navarino at the WTM World Responsible Tourism Awards as part of the international tourism exhibition World Travel Market 2022 in London.

Costa Navarino has reduced its use of single-use plastic by 10% in 2021 compared to 2019, and excluding single-use plastic for protection against Covid, the reduction will be 23%, according to the company’s announcement. At the same time, the use of plastic bottles has been reduced by 50%.

To limit single-use plastic, Costa Navarino has joined forces with WWF Greece. The program maintains an annual record of the amount of plastic used at the destination, and the goal is to reduce the amount of waste plastic as much as possible through the use of alternative materials and packaging. The goal of this initiative – in addition to drastically reducing plastic waste and plastic pollution of the seas – is to mobilize suppliers, the local community and the tourism industry as a whole to set ambitious targets for the elimination of single-use plastic, as emphasized. He notes that this collaboration is a natural extension of Costa Navarino’s participation in the United Nations (UN) Global Plastic Tourism Initiative, which is being implemented by UNEP and UNWTO in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Another important goal of Costa Navarino is to achieve a zero carbon footprint of properties by 2030 through the implementation of a comprehensive emission reduction strategy that includes, among other things, immediate measures to reduce emissions and the production of renewable energy. According to the company, as part of Costa Navarino’s commitment to sustainability, a number of initiatives to protect the environment have been implemented, such as the largest olive tree transplantation program in Europe, the creation of three tanks with a total capacity of 1,180,000 m2. to cover irrigation needs solely from excess surface water runoff, and the establishment in 2009, together with the University of Stockholm and the Navarino Ecological Observatory (NEO) of Athens, of a research and education center on climate and the environment in the Mediterranean.
