Discussions on the cancellation of new registrations of internal combustion vehicles until 2035 in order to reduce CO2 emissions, which were recently materialized by the agreement of the Parliament and the European Council, began several years ago and have already produced results. Consumers have started to avoid buying cars with internal combustion engines and turn to environmentally friendly ones to avoid the possible consequences of the ban on their circulation/registration.

The agreement mentioned above stipulates, as an intermediate step towards zero emissions, that the new CO2 standards will also require average emissions of new cars to be reduced by 55% by 2030 and new vans by 50% by 2030. In addition to climate goals, this agreement reinforces estimates of the acceleration of the transition to environmentally friendly cars, in particular all-electric ones, according to a recent report by strategy&, the global strategy division of PwC, which shows that nine out of ten (93%) cars sold in 2035, will be electric (BEV).

Despite strong quarter-on-quarter growth, sales of clean cars (electric, hybrid and plug-in) in Romania reached only 20% of the total market, compared to 46% in Western Europe, still remaining. far from the ambitious goals set by the European Union until 2035.

However, both the consequences of the possible ban on combustion engine cars and the incentives proposed in the last two years in European countries have had the expected effect, and the number of registrations of cars with a high degree of pollution has been significantly reduced.

Thus, the market share of registration of new cars with an internal combustion engine (ICE-Internal combustion engine) decreased in the first five European markets (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain) to 58.2% in 2021 from 92% in 2019, according to the data. to strategy and data.
