The surface of her station line 4 from underground on the square Exarchion will occupy less than 10% of the area, said the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in charge of infrastructure, George Karagiannis.
On the radio station SKAI, Mr. Karagiannis said that “Exarchion Square has an area of 2,984 sq.m. and the area that will be used after the construction of the station will be 243 sq.m.”
The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure stressed that “the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is collaborating with the local government for the first time on a major project and, in particular, has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Municipality of Athens, according to which 2,000 trees will be planted in addition to those envisaged.”
In addition, according to Mr. Karagiannis, “architectural competitions will be held for the aesthetic renewal of all areas where metro stations will be built.”
“Another feature of the 4th line is that the stations are getting smaller, and a significant part of the earthwork will be carried out underground in order to disturb residents and specialists as little as possible,” added Mr. Karagiannis.
He agreed with the related comment that the new metro line would be a “Parisian line” as it would be located within the urban fabric, however, he said, “Paris has 4 metro stations per sq. the same in Athens for 1 sq. km. we did not have time to build a metro station.”
Giving a broader picture of the importance of the project, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure said that with Metro Line 4, “340,000 people will move daily and 55,000 cars will be removed from the roads.”
He explained that “the location of metro stations is done scientifically and after the preparation of studies that take into account a set of parameters.”
Overall, the goal, according to Mr. Karagiannis, is to “change the perception of the transport problem in Athens with a new metro line and the extension to Piraeus that we provide for traffic in the next period, and the extension to Ilion, which we will announce in 2022.”
