Diesel prices have started to fall slightly since Thursday, September 15 in Bucharest, after they have been steadily increasing in relation to gasoline prices in the recent period. Asked on Friday whether the government would extend the 50 paisa fuel compensation scheme, Prime Minister Chuke said a decision would be made by the end of this month.
- “We will have to make a decision at the meeting of the Coalition next week. As you can see, this event has been running since the 2nd day after I made this decision.
- Now we have to analyze what are the elements of the evolution of fuel prices, what is the evolution of the price of oil on the international market, and depending on this we will make a decision.” This was announced by Prime Minister Nikolay Chuke on Friday.
The compensation scheme of 50 paise per liter of petrol and diesel came into force on July 1, 2022, when the prices really came down.
The compensation scheme is voluntary for gas stations, and the 50-gross discount goes equally to the state budget and to the gas station. This scheme is valid until September 30, so it is not yet known whether the Government will extend it or not.
Diesel prices started to fall in Bucharest on September 15
Data analyzed by HotNews.ro shows that diesel prices in Bucharest have started to decrease slightly since Thursday, September 15, after a constant increase during the last period.
Thus, according to data from Peco-online.ro, on September 15, the average price of a liter of standard diesel fuel was 8.35 lei, which was the first drop this month after a wave of price increases.
At the end of August 2022, the average price of a liter of diesel fuel in Bucharest was 8.36 lei, and subsequently prices began to rise daily.
What Virgil Popescu said on Wednesday: It is possible that there will be another downward correction in diesel prices
HotNews.ro writes about this on Tuesday, September 13 diesel prices continued to rise relative to gasolineclose to the level of July 1, when the 50p petrol and diesel compensation scheme came into effect and prices fell.
Answering a question in the government on Wednesday, September 14, whether he expects the price of diesel fuel to return above 9 lei/liter, Energy Minister Virgil Popescu replied that he does not believe and has information from the market that there will be a drop in diesel prices.
- “Romania is an importer of diesel fuel. I also saw an increase today and yesterday, from 8.33 lei to 8.44 lei, an increase of 11 money. The diesel price 10 days ago, from what I managed to check this morning, went up a bit along with the lei-dollar ratio, not lei-euro, because the excise duty is paid in dollars.
- And in general, when we talk about excise taxes, we should look at the dollar, not the euro. True, the euro also rose and returned, but I do not expect a very strong increase in the price of diesel.
- We have already discussed on the market, and we can expect a new downward adjustment in the price of diesel,” Minister Virgil Popescu said on Wednesday.
The minister also clarified that “the price of oil is one thing and it is directly reflected in the price of gasoline, which continues to decrease, but the price of diesel is affected by the international price of diesel, not oil, because we are also importers of diesel.”
