Greek employers ‘see’ fall in hiring in Q4

Cautious, mainly due to the international situation, look Greek employers for the fourth quarter of 2022 in terms of the overall quarterly employment forecast ManpowerGroup survey. Thus, the relative index in Greece is -3%, with the strongest sector being Restaurants-Leisure-Hotels, where employment prospects reach +12%, however, this means a decrease of 4% compared to the third quarter of 2022.

According to the ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey, the only region that did not see a quarter-on-quarter drop in hiring was Northern Greece, which posted a quarterly growth of 3%.

In particular, the rate of potential hiring by Greek companies remains low, with the overall employment outlook (NEW) showing a 3% decline. In addition, 24% of employers expect an increase in the number of employees, 33% expect a reduction and 40% do not expect any changes.

Greek employers expect hiring rates to decline in 8 out of 11 sectors in the fourth quarter of 2022, while two sectors are expected to rise and one sector is expected to show no change.

The best employment prospects are recorded in the “Restaurants – Entertainment – Hotels” sector.

The most competitive/strong sector in Greece is Restaurants, Leisure & Hotels, where the occupancy forecast reaches +12, which means an increase of 18% compared to the previous quarter and 15% compared to the corresponding quarter of last year. Characteristically, the Food, Entertainment and Hotels sector ranks third in the world in terms of quarterly growth, exceeding the global average quarterly growth by 8%. In contrast, the construction sector is the “weakest link” this quarter as it recorded the lowest NEW index (-21) but remains stable compared to the previous quarter in terms of hiring.

The strongest region in Greece is the wider Attica region with NEW -1, despite expectations in the region falling 1% qoq. The only region that not only did not register a decrease in the number of hirings compared to the previous quarter, but instead recorded a quarterly increase of 3%, was Northern Greece.

Employers at large enterprises with more than 250 employees are more optimistic as they expect employment growth of NEO +13 and 9% compared to the third quarter of 2022.
