Faster fiber projects

Licensing of fiber optic network development projects is getting easier and faster. The immediate expansion of new generation networks is a prerequisite for improving Greece’s position in terms of quality and penetration of high-speed lines of at least 100 Mbit/s, with the possibility of upgrading to gigabit speeds. A joint ministerial decision by Deputy Minister of Digital Governance Thodoris Livanios and Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Nikos Tagaras defines the requirements for the inclusion of projects for the passage of electronic networks in the category of unattractive (with local and negligible environmental impact). This new legal framework includes, among other things, the obligation to provide for the necessary sections of pavement in each new fiber installation project in order to ensure connectivity for all buildings located in the installation from the very beginning. region. As well as timely coordination of work with the planned road construction projects of municipalities and regions, which usually does not happen today. After the launch of the Information System, through which applications for the development of fiber optic networks will be submitted, the implementation of specific projects will be further facilitated.

During this period, telecom service providers are launching more investments than ever before. OTE Group is planning an investment of 3 billion euros with a time horizon up to 2027, so that in the next four years, the optical network to the home (FTTH) will reach 3 million homes and businesses.

Nova-Wind, which is under the umbrella of the United Group, will invest more than 1.3 billion euros by 2026 to develop the FTTH network and cover the national 5G network. Vodafone plans to connect more than 800,000 households and businesses to FTTH and FTTC (fiber in the cabin) networks by 2024 with a €600 million investment.
