In recent years, the use of electric scooters continues to grow. Which leads to many abuses.
New rules for scooters
Indeed, the number of deaths and injuries caused by these new devices continues to rise despite the many measures taken. So, the government wants to go even further. Because until now vertical road signs, be they signs or traffic lights, did not extend to scooters, balancers or electric scooters. Then only bicycles were affected. But now that is changing. And for good reason, since March 23, the decree published in the Official Journal has changed the situation: EDPM drivers must now respect the Traffic Rules, as cyclists already do in theory, even if this is not always followed. There Traffic safety explained that signs prohibiting the movement of bicycles, traffic lights with bicycle figures, and recommended or mandatory bicycle lanes and lanes are no longer exclusively for users of conventional or electric bicycles.
Scooters are now more adjustable
EDPM users, including electric scooters, must now follow these guidelines, thus contributing to a better coexistence of different modes of transportation in the urban environment. But will these new rules be enough to reduce the number of accidents involving EDPM? The answer is not obvious. In 2022, 22 people lost their lives while riding a scooter or e-scooter, compared to 10 in 2019. The National Academy of Medicine has already pointed out the risk factors associated with this new practice. urban micromobility. These risks are numerous: the design of cars, the behavior of drivers, the condition of roads and the shared use of public space. However, the issue of sanctions has not yet been raised. Will they be the same as for bikes? We don’t know yet at this point, but honestly, it would make perfect sense for that to be the case.
We hope that these new measures will help create a safe environment for everyone, especially in big cities!
