To raise awareness and take action to prevent road accidents, the United Nations inaugurated a new brand in Geneva: “24seconds”.

This initiative, announced during a high mass in Switzerland, is being implemented by the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF), which is launching a global call to action.

Road safety is a global problem

Why “24 seconds”? Because every 24 seconds, died in a road accident. This reality, mentioned by URSF, underscores the urgency of action to prevent these road tragedies that harm families and communities around the world. “24seconds” aims to unite companies around the issue of road safety. URSF is asking for donations, in particular in the automotive industry, and is considering partnering with brands to offer products labeled “24seconds.” This approach aims to make road safety more “attractive” and open up new avenues for funding and donor engagement.
A statement from the URSF explained that the aim is to promote road safety in an inclusive manner while drawing attention to the need for local rule changes. Funds collected in this way will help solve problems in road safety systems in disadvantaged and developing countries through URSF projects.

What is it actually used for?

The planned actions cover a wide range of measures, from promoting the use of helmets to improving vehicle safety standards, standardizing road design to better protect pedestrians and cyclists, and improving emergency services.
Jean Todt, former Ferrari and Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) director and now UN special envoy for road safety, clarified: “Road traffic accidents are a silent pandemic that has a dramatic impact on developing countries. Every year, 1.19 million people die on the roads, and every second a young person becomes disabled for life. »
Tetyana Molchan, Deputy Secretary General of the UN, added: “We need initiatives like 24 Seconds to increase private funding and halve road deaths by 2030.”

She also called on the automotive industry to play a central role in improving road safety on all continents.
